A Way To Maximize Your NLP Skills

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) supplies a complete array of strategies and techniques for bringing about change in both your everyday life and the lives of those you love and everyone else too. You recognize that there are occasions when we wish that we could behave in a different way. You will perhaps identify with men and women who have problems with stage fright. We don’t even have to be in the situation. Merely thinking about it can easily bring us out into a cold sweat. We recall circumstances when we have been stressed in front of people before, and we might also use our imaginations to think about all the things that might go awry. And you know what, we are not wrong
You can see from the example that we actually practise getting into negative resource states, such as feeling nervous, on a regular basis. Although these states are not especially useful, we clearly know well the practice of state induction and there is no reason why we should not employ the same process to generate positive resource states.
And so, what sort of emotional state would be valuable in this circumstance? The choice is yours, but it would most likely be valuable to be self-assured and relaxed. There have perhaps been a number of additional instances when you have encountered these feelings previously. Simply sit back and think back to when you last felt calm and self-confident. Perhaps it was yesterday or perhaps many years ago. Evoke everything about it, from how you were standing, how you were breathing, how you felt, what you observed and what you were listening to back then.
Now, if you are imagining that you can’t do this because you have not felt this way before, then envision how someone who is calm and self-confident would stand, breathe and feel. Perhaps this is an individual you respect for being this way. When you have achieved the sought after state, ramp it up to make it as vivid and pleasing as possible. This is where one of your other %LINK1% comes into play. This is known as anchoring. In this situation, an anchor is a trigger for the state change. Thus, when you are fully experiencing the state such as calm and confident, that you want to re-induce one day, you could, for example, scratch the back of your neck or squeeze together the thumb and index finger of your right hand; it is your preference. In this fashion, the selected action becomes an integral part of the calm and confident state. So, when you do the trigger action again, for example, as you think about or enter the situation where you would previously have been stressed, you naturally enter the desired resource state.
You are possibly now recognizing the importance of practising the %LINK1% of creating resource states and anchoring. These are NLP techniques that you can apply to all areas of your life. Of course, the beauty of mastering these skills is that the resulting states will drastically strengthen your communication skills and have a beneficial effect on the other individuals that you come into contact with.

Giving yourself the mental edge
In an recent article about NLP in sport, I reviewed the substantial power of visualisation. To refresh briefly the main principle – your body will follow the behaviours just run through consciously .
To give you an example of this that you can try out , you first need to find a pendulum (not a huge one like in a grandfather clock! ). If you can’t find a pendulum, them get hold of a plumbline and put a thread through it. This is an stunning exercise I use often when I am running my NLP training in North London and it really can stun people!
Now, grasp the chain or thread gently between your thumb and index finger, relax your arm and imagine drawing a circle with your hand holding the plumbline or pendulum . Don’t move your hand – just imagine drawing the circle in your mind.
Now for most people , what you will find is that as you mentally draw the circle in your mind, the pendulum starts to go in a circle also. In case you are imagining it is due to random movement in your arms, now imagine drawing the circle the other way? and be shocked when the pendulum starts moving in the other direction !
Let me stress , it is not some spirit moving the pendulum! Through imagining drawing the circle in your mind, you are passing communication through your central nervous system to your muscles in your arm you are visualising to create the circle. You cannot see your arm moving, however the micro-muscle movements (a great bit of jargon that basically means tiny movements in the muscle!) are increased by means of the pendulum and you thence see the pendulum moving in a circle .
The same thing would happen if you mentally run through doing any behaviour. Eg, if you imagine doing a sprint along a track perfectly and run through in your mind what you would discover whilst you do it, you will actually be triggering the neural pathways and muscles involved in the performance .
Possibly you are imagining ‘hey now I don’t need to go to the gym to exercise any more?!’, I’m afraid its not going to grow muscle or make you drop a size just by your mental imagery, however it will make living the activity easier the next time you do it – because you’re going to train your neural pathways .
I often train performers using NLP in sport and also hypnosis to help raise performance and take athletes through amazing internal techniques to help them improve their performance and they discover great results.
The key is really that you need to visualise doing perfect performance . If you run through in your mind incorrect performance , then you’ll basically be mastering the neural pathways for and rubbish performance. There’s an old legend – ‘practice makes perfect’. It should really be written – perfect practice makes perfect!
So don’t just do active practice, make sure you often make yourself do mental practice. Run through perfect performance and keep doing it until you get it just right now ! It doesn’t matter the context where in life you do it , this is going to help you.
