There is very little research evidence to support the efficacy of NLP. It is considered "pseudo-science" by many. A good review of the effectiveness of NLP hasn't been done in the past 20 years. That's because research interest in NLP has pretty much dried up. NLP proponents are still out there, but they don't tend to be in mainstream psychology.

I agree that Michael Hall and Neuro semantics is very useful. I personally got unstuck from some very strange things. I found "Secrets of Personal Mastery" very powerful too.

I haven't done any of his trainings, but people I know have found him to be a positive force in their lives.

On the downside, his insistence on his own interpretation of logical levels - that "about" means a higher level and the whole "is it sub or meta" tied me up in knots that took a while to unravel.

NLP is way more than framing. Michael's "Mindlines" is easier to understand extension of Robert Dilt's "Sleight of Mouth". Steve Andreas' "Core Transformations" was way before anything of MH's and before that John Grinders "six step reframe". These models deal well with belief type issues, including beliefs about self.

Many "issues" aren't belief or framing issues (an away from thing really). For instance, modeling and strategies work to increase learning and effectiveness, not to mention the Meta and Milton models to communicate better. Sometimes the issue is needing more skill.

NLP is good for things like getting in the right frame of mind. Definately read up on some techniques. Other alternatives would be to take a class on interpersonal communication. They usually will offer this at any community college.

I know about NLp and little experience, it is expensive to hire a therapist , and one trained in this..........
I think EMDR is also expensive for the same reasons
I like /prefer and use EFT which there is a free version of it below you /one can apply themselves and remove all the negative in their lives, quickly ,a few minutes for each , and compared to long term therapy , there is;no comparison.......therapy doesnt remove anything bad, it just helps some people live with it..........that isnt good enough , i dont think.........one can also hire someone trained in it
so here is the free version if you wa;nt it, it is closing in march when he retires

There are many reasons that NLP is controversial. Katies answer seems somewhat wide of the mark to me. Its rather odd to suggest that NLP doesn't work and that its borrowed from else where. Which is it?

As to proving NLP, yes its difficult to test many areas simply because it is impossible to test without involving people and therefore the testing becomes subjective. One day maybe someone will come up with a good test for something like a phobia cure.

One major reason for the controversy is the way in which NLP is presented. Its very easy to see it as being a little like scientology in that you pay a lot of money for course after course. I have commented myself (see link below) that NLP is a bit like a pyramid scheme.

There is also a lack of quality control - too many people with practitioner certificates who can do nothing at all. Personally I hate the NLP community because of this.

As to psychologists, there is another reason they don't like it - like many acedemics they update and change their ideas slowly and rarely. Also its not in the interest of someone whos done years of study to become a high paid professional to endorse something that appears to be 10 times quicker, easier and more effective than what they do themselves.

NLP is a sprawlling mess of techniques and models, and like you there are areas I find very useful and other areas I just am not interested in. Stick with what works for you and you can't go far wrong whether the acedemics are willing to endorse it or not.

Hi,
I am creating my NLP-Mentor website for people just like you. When I did all my training back in the early 90's it cost me a lot of money and also time. But it really was useful and it got me through some very dark times.

Since then, I am aware that not everyone is so lucky and I always wanted to make NLP available to people who couldn't afford the time or money to do courses. I even did a degree in multimedia and e learning - eventually I will make the site more interactive.

So while nothing beats NLP training with a great teacher, you will hopefully find my site useful. Please let me know what you think.

Neil Strauss' "the game" has a bit, but he mostly focuses on the Mystery method. In his book he mentions a lot of other books though, the ones he used.... seems silly to buy a book just to look for the titles of other books, though. Maybe borrow a copy.

also if you head down to the library they usually have a lot of weird or old or rare books, just look for ones on hypnosis

Yes, there are a few techniques that seem to overlap between silva mind control and NLP. I would say there are more differences than similarities between NLP and Silva.

It is not unusual to find similarities between methods in similar fields. For example, there are many types of visualization techniques taught by many authors. There is a big overlap between hypnosis and visualization.

In energy psychology, there are EFT (emotional freedom techniques), TFT (thought field therapy), TAT (tapas acupressure therapy), and the work of Donna Eden.

Sorry, but I don't know of any article where Silva and NLP are compared. It would be interesting to find an article like that. All my best.
